I came across a very good article on google pagerank on efactory.de. While it's not everything you need to know, it is a very good starting off place if you are trying to begin unravelling the google machine, or any other search machine.

All very interesting, although technical reading, but that's the nature of the beast, Google isn't going to publish a clear document on how to do this kind of work now are they?
